Sophie Küppers

and other consignees

The Catalogue lists 13 people and galleries to whom Mondrian consigned paintings for hopeful sales. The main two in the early years were Sophie Küppers and the Kunstausstellung Kühl in Dresden and these are detailed below. The other consignees are listed on another page.

In Missing Mondrians I wrote,

A theme running throughout the project is “consigned to Sophie Küppers”. The Catalogue shows sixteen known works and two unidentifiable works (U15 and U20) sent to Sophie in Hanover or Dresden … In addition, eight other known works plus U23 were consigned to the Kunstausstellung Kühl in Dresden and Sophie passed eight of her consigned pictures to the Kunstausstellung Kühl. In September 1925, the twelve consigned to Sophie in June of that year were shown in the Dresden Kühl and Kühn exhibition. In March 1929, Bois et. al. [p.56] state that “nineteen paintings - all his unsold work in Germany together with recent work from Paris - [were shown] in an exhibition of modern chair design entitled Der Stuhl at the Kunstgewerbe museum in Frankfurt.
The fates of the twenty-four known consignments to Hanover and Dresden may be summarised as: ten lost; four now in private collections; ten in major galleries and collections.
